Car Fluid Leak: Diagnose by Location and Context

Treat the leak as unknown until proven
Do not identify a puddle by touching, smelling closely, or tasting it. Vehicle fluids vary in color with age and formulation, and road water can carry fuel, coolant, oil, brake fluid, washer fluid, battery electrolyte, or contaminants from another vehicle.
Keep children and animals away. Fuel odor, smoke, active dripping onto hot parts, brake or steering change, overheating, a high-voltage battery leak or damage, or a rapidly growing puddle calls for shutdown, safe evacuation as needed, and qualified towing or emergency help.
Mark the parking position
On a safe level surface, place clean absorbent material or cardboard beneath the vehicle without crawling under it. Mark tire positions and note time, weather, air-conditioning use, recent rain, refill or service history, and whether the engine was running. Observe the leak's location relative to the vehicle rather than assuming the component directly above is the source.
Airflow and gravity carry fluid rearward or along shields, frames, and harnesses. The first drip point may be several components away from the actual leak.
Use context more than color
Clear water after air-conditioning use may be normal condensation, but verify that no odor, oily feel, warning, or abnormal source accompanies it without direct contact. Engine oil, transmission fluid, gear oil, coolant, brake fluid, fuel, washer fluid, and hydraulic fluids overlap in appearance.
Check fluid levels only through the exact manual procedure. Some systems are sealed, checked at a stated temperature, pressurized, or unsafe for owner access. Never open a hot cooling system or loosen a fuel, brake, air-conditioning, or high-voltage thermal connection.
Trace from clean, safe visibility
A technician may clean the area through approved methods, use lighting, mirrors, service covers, pressure tests, fluorescent dye specified for that system, or other manufacturer procedures. Dye type and quantity are not universal; the wrong product can contaminate a system.
Never crawl under a jack-only vehicle. Use exact lift points and rated support on a suitable surface, or leave underbody access to a shop.
Connect the leak to operating symptoms
Record warning lights, temperature, odor, smoke, noise, shift quality, brake or steering feel, fluid consumption, and when the leak appears. A cooling leak relates directly to overheating response. A brake-fluid concern is a no-drive condition until professionally assessed.
Do not add fluid repeatedly without finding the cause. Overfilling, mixing specifications, and operating a low system can each cause damage.
Repair the path, then clean and recheck
The correction may involve a seal, hose, line, housing, fastener procedure, vent, cap, cooler, pump, mating surface, or component damage. Use the exact fluid, cleanliness, bleeding, fill-level, torque, and disposal process. Some apparent leaks are residue from a prior spill; only cleaning and repeated observation separates history from an active fault.
Use the DIY-versus-shop boundary for any safety-critical, pressurized, hot, toxic, refrigerant, fuel, or high-voltage system. After repair, follow the verification checklist under the original temperature and operating context.
A drip is excellent at traveling and terrible at giving directions. Location starts the investigation; it does not finish it.
Photograph the cleaned area and new trace so repeat evidence remains comparable.
