A new part has not previously served in a vehicle, but it may come from the vehicle manufacturer or an independent supplier. Remanufactured, rebuilt, and reconditioned parts have undergone some restoration process, though scope and terminology vary. A used or salvage part comes from another vehicle with limited or no restoration.
The FTC uses these broad classes in its consumer repair guidance and notes that quality and warranties vary. Ask for the exact supplier, process, part number, and written coverage.
New parts simplify history but not fitment
New original-equipment or aftermarket parts avoid unknown service wear, yet catalog errors, revisions, counterfeit goods, poor manufacturing, storage damage, and incompatible calibrations still occur. Confirm vehicle identification, build date, equipment, emissions certification, connector, software, and supersession.
The highest price is not proof of compatibility. The lowest price occasionally arrives with a connector shaped like a philosophical objection.
Remanufactured parts depend on process and core
A strong remanufacturing program may disassemble, clean, inspect, machine, replace defined wear items, update known weaknesses, test, and document the unit. Another product may receive a narrower repair. Ask what is always replaced, what is tested, whether updates are included, and who performs the work.
Core charges require returning the old unit in acceptable condition. Confirm timing, packaging, fluid drainage, shipping, and what happens if the core is damaged or not original.
Used parts preserve assemblies and uncertainty
Used body, trim, glass, bracket, or discontinued components may be practical when condition can be inspected. Mechanical, electronic, restraint, brake, steering, high-voltage, emissions, security, and safety-related parts bring greater concerns about wear, crash or flood history, programming, transport, and legal restrictions.
Ask for donor identification, mileage if verified, condition grading, photos, test results, return policy, and warranty. Never install a used airbag, pyrotechnic, high-voltage, or safety-critical component unless current law and exact manufacturer procedures explicitly permit that sourced unit and qualified handling.
Compare the whole installed repair
Price should include labor, fluids, seals, one-time fasteners, programming, coding, calibration, core and shipping charges, downtime, and what happens if the part fails. A cheaper part with no labor reimbursement can cost more when access requires many hours.
Approve the written estimate with the parts class and warranty named, not hidden behind “replace component.”
Check coverage and formal remedies first
A repair may fall under factory warranty, service contract, insurance, emissions coverage, or safety recall. Follow prior-authorization and provider procedures before purchasing. Review recall, bulletin, and warranty differences rather than assuming a bulletin supplies free parts.
Verify fit, installation, and function
Inspect delivered parts before installation, compare connections and revisions, use exact torque, cleanliness, fluid, seal, programming, and calibration procedures, and retain packaging and records. After installation, verify the original symptom, codes, leaks, data, and operation through the repair checklist.
Choose the part whose documented history, process, support, and risk fit the system. “New,” “reman,” and “used” begin the questions; they do not answer them.
Confirm return deadlines before installation leaves the original vehicle unable to move.
